The floor is concrete and still has some goo on it, I am afraid the paint will not stick in those spots. Is there any good cleaner or primer? How can I make floor paint stick to a floor where there were once peel and stick tiles?
Well, you can try denatured alcohol, or maybe some Goo-B-Gone, then the alcohol after you use that product.
Water blasting, sometimes brings up all that garbage...(I would want to water blast it anyways, to get all the accumulation of dirt and grime up, so the paint will stick better).
As for a primer?..I only used grey or red enamel paint for my basement, with no primer on it.
But, if water hits it, or floods the basement, the paint will ';lift';, and nothing will stop that!
So, before I paint, I would do a ';water test'; first.
I would get a 12'; X 12'; piece of plastic, (clear 3 or 4 mil plastic), and put about 4 or so around the entire basement, duct taping all four sides, so that its secured to the floor.
Let this stand for 24 hours and see if any of them have water vapors inside the plastic after that time...
If not, then you wont have to worry about failing paint.
If so, then I might want to paint the floor with dry loc first, so that you will prevent the moisture from coming up and ruining the paint.
Just my suggestions....(I never had to worry about paint coming up, so I didnt use dry loc, as a primer first).
If you ';do'; use dry loc, remember there are a LOT of organic volitile fumes, associated with this, and you need to turn off all pilot lights to funaces and hot water tanks, and have a ';lot'; of ventilation in the area, so that your not overcomed by fumes!
I wish you well..
JesseHow can I make floor paint stick to a floor where there were once peel and stick tiles?
it's not fun, but you need to scrape all the old glue with a razor blade, and then mop with a degreaser, like simple green
there are plenty of adhesive removers out there all you have to do is go to home depot or lowes and ask some one there to point u in the right direction but this process is very messy or you can cover the floor with a floor patch then paint
If you use any type of chemical remover to remove the glue, you must deactivate it prior to applying the finish to the floor, or the paint will not bond. I would suggest a floor sander to clean up the surface, then go to a real paint store and buy the primer recommended by them and the top coat they recommend. Lowe's and Home Depot won't be able to help.
Alot less work and aggrevation to just install (glue) 1/4 inch plywood over the whole floor. Then get some ';deck'; paint.
Make sure it's cleaned off or the paint will come off right away. Scrape it off. Wipe it down or mop it, let the cleaned floor dry %26amp; paint. Kills is a good primer, but you have to get the old stuff off.
