You'll need to strip it using a belt sander first, as otherwise the paint will just flake off - but beware, only strip the top off if it's good quality wood! If it's just a ';wooden plated'; type of floorboard then it may ruin it forever! Best to strip it with a sander first. You can hire em easy enough, they look like bloody lawn-mowers!
You could use an oil based paint like eggshell.
