all the above ideas are good. i painted a plywood floor. i painted a plywood floor once with an outdoor patio and deck stain. it eliminated any preparation and turned out nice and was durable. it turned out flat, but if u don't like it u can put a sealer over it.I want to paint plywood floor in cottage.removed carpet?
We painted our vinyl floor in the kitchen. ';Ace'; Hardware sells a new floor paint that is very good, a little pricey but, covers well and holds through time and wear.

I would clean the floor very well. Then use a good wood filler and sealer, then sand the floor and seal it again. then paint it.
I would prime it with a good primer - cheap start but effective - then square off sections in like 12'; X 12'; and go black and white like the old 50's style and then seal with clear coat. So clean and fresh and would look lovely in a cottage and you could use any colors for decorating.
sand if needed.

sweep and vacuum well.

use Zinsser brand BIN SHELLAC based primer. it has a RED label. this stuff stinks, so have some ventiation or a fan.

it will keep the tannins in the plywood from bleeding through.

don't use the BLUE label. it is water base and the tannins will still bleed through.

then top coat with a good floor and deck paint.
YOU MUST USE A PRIMER B.I.N IS VERRY GOOD

USE THE THE BLUE LABEL 2 COATS THEN FINISH WITH

A GOOD PAINT
