It is a chocolate brown and I want to get it up and just have the hardwood. Please tell me what to do I don't have a clue.I just bought a house and the whole hardwood floor has been painted how do I remove all the paint off?
Contact several floor refinishers in your area and ask for estimates. They will tell you if it's better to let them sand off the paint and refinish the floor or if you should use a chemical stripper first. Since paint strippers are wet by nature, some of the paint color may seep into the wood which would be bad.
You might also want to try using a sanding block in an inconspicuous corner to see what the wood looks like underneath. The paint may be hiding a floor that isn't worth refinishing.I just bought a house and the whole hardwood floor has been painted how do I remove all the paint off?
Rent a Electric Sander and sand the floors until even. Be careful not to go too deep or it will ruin the wood. You can stain the floors or just put a Poly type vanish on them. They will only have to be mopped or dusted, not waxed. Go ahead and get a quote from a service or two over the phone if you don't want to do it yourself--it's surprisingly affordable.
Check with your local rental shop. They have a floor sander that will do the trick. You can use the large full sheet flat sander...or the drum sander. The drum sander takes it off faster....but you have to be very careful not to go too slow while sanding...otherwise you will sand too deep. The flat sheet sander doesn't take off as much and the sand paper sheets get clogged faster...which requires frequent changes.
You can mixed up some paint stripper that works pretty good.
Here is what you need.....
1 - 5 gal heavy duty plastic buckets
1 - can of Red Devil Lye
1 - Box of Faultless Starch -- powder
Put 1 gallon of water into bucket...mix in the starch....then mix in the Red Devil Lye....The solution will start to heat up from chemical reaction.....now mix in another gallon of water. Let the solution set for a while before using. The mixture should be like a thin batch of pancake mix. Use an old mop and dip it into bucket and smear the mixture on the floor. Put it on real thick. This mixture will is very caustic and will start to bubble up the paint. Once it bubbles up...use a large flat scrapper to lift the old paint off the floor.
Make sure you have some windows open, because the fumes are pretty strong.
