Is it possible to paint clay floor tiles?

Repairing a small bathroom that has a clay tile floor that was previously painted. Water was leaking under the floor over an extended period of time. The paint that was on it peeled off easily but the water has left staining marks on the tile as to why would like to paint now. Have only been in the home a short period of time so don't know when it was painted. Think was painted to cover up the leak and the damage it was causing. Option 2 can tile be sanded and sealed if not painted?Is it possible to paint clay floor tiles?
