Can't really sand it, and not sure what kind of primer or paint to use. It is a 100+ year old hardwood floor and the gloss of the old paint is gone from wear. There was a carpet and old vinyl/lineoluem(?) over it for 30, 40 or more years. Please help! How do you prep a floor to paint if it has lead paint?
Wash it with a good degreaser and scrape off any chunks of old adhesive. Then prime with an epoxy or gloss surface primer. Once the primer is on, your lead is encapsulated and you can paint over it without any problem. I'd give it 2 coats of a good alkyd paint and 2-3 coats of a good urethane/varethane for floors. How do you prep a floor to paint if it has lead paint?
If your going to paint the floor you should make sure it is clean and then paint it with floor and porch paint.Sanding will be a waste of time.Floor and porch paint will adhere to the old paint very well
